Filled Under:

eFun Nextbook Elite 10 is a dual-core Android 4.0 tablet for under $300

Though you may have thought 2011 was already the year of the tablet, 2012 is shaping up to reallybe the year of the tablet —and we’re not even a full week in yet. Apart from the possible arrival of a new iPad model or two, it looks like the Android tablet price war is really going to start heating up. That is, if new models like the eFun Nextbook Elite 10 are any indication.
The Elite 10 packs a 1.1GHz Broadcomm processor and a 9.7-inch display that’s capable of pumping out 1024×768 pixels. That package is actually somewhat similar to what you’d get in one of those firesale HP TouchPads, but in this case the latest Android OS is pre-loaded — no firmware modifications necessary. There’s also a 2MP front-facing camera for your video conferencing and selfshot needs, and the SlideMe app store comes preinstalled. Does that mean Google’s core apps are missing? Possibly, but eFun hasn’t provided many details about the Elite 10 just yet. It’s due to be on display at CES 2012, so we’ll find out in a few short weeks just how much Ice Cream Sandwich goodness the budget slate is packing.
While you might not have heard of eFun before, this isn’t their first venture into the tablet market. Like other lesser-known brands, eFun has built its reputation by offering decently-specced models at low price points. They haven’t always been well-received, with reviewers noting sluggish performance on many of their previous efforts. The BCM28150 processor might just help the Elite 10 buck that trend, however. Its 3D capabilities aren’t quite top-of-the-line, but it’s a very capable chip for most other tablet uses.
